[70] Pattons of Daviess Co Mo

possible siblings, children of (unknown) PATTON:

1.     William John Patton, born 1826 Tenn, married Mary Jane Hopkins in Daviess Co on 5 Nov 1846. She was born 29 Sept 1830 (IGI) in Virginia. They are here in 1860 living in Jefferson Twp., also in 1880. At this time his father’s place of birth is given as Tenn, mother’s as NC.

        a.     James Patton, b 1846-7 Mo

        b.     Amanda Patton, b 1850 Mo

        c.      John Patton, b 1855 Mo

        d.     Phebe Patton, b 1858 Mo

        e.     [others born after 1860]

2.    Andrew Thomas Patton, b 1828 Tenn, married Charlotte Koger in Daviess Co. on 5 Sept 1849. They are on the 1850 Daviess census, p 353, in 1860 living next door to William (above); he was still living in Daviess Co in 1900- he married [second] Gabriella _____ prior to 1880. In the 1880 census his father is shown as b NC, mother Tenn.

        a.     Magdalene Patton, b 1850 Mo

        b.     Ella Patton, b 1851 Mo

        c.      John Patton, b 1853 Mo

        d.     Mary Patton, b 1856 Mo

        e.     —--

        f.      Joseph Patton, b 1860 Mo

3.    Magdalene Patton, b 1825 Tenn, living with Andrew in 1850. She was illiterate. Shortly after the census was taken, she married Thomas Ruby in Daviess Co.

Comparing data on Wm J and Andrew T, it appears they are likely brothers, and that their father was born in NC or Tennessee, but married in Tenn. probably about 1824. We might look for a Patton family in 1840 in the Tenn census which fits the above three hypothetical siblings.

*******

A pair of Patton brothers (Mathew and William T) was in Daviess Co in 1840, passing thru to Oregon- see page 15.14. Mathew built a mill here at a place later called PATTONSBURG- this town is still in existence. This line was from Monongalia Co, Va. In addition a Granville Patton (b 1849 Va) was here in 1900- no relation however.

[71] Thomas J Patton of Clinton Co Mo [from KY]

Thomas J Patton was born in Ky in or around 1804-1805. On 11 Oct 1827 he married Edith Moberly in Madison Co Ky. She was born in Ky around 1806. For whatever reason Thomas is not indexed as a head of household in Ky in 1830; he is still in Madison Co Ky in 1840, a slave owner. Since he is the only Patton head of household in that census we have no clues as to brothers. Between 1844 and 1849 he moved to Missouri and his family is enumerated in the Clinton Co census. The 1850 census shows:

Thomas J PATTEN                    46          Ky

Edith “                            44

       James M Patten                    21

       Milton M “                            19                    [not found in 1880 census]

Thomas does not appear to be in Clinton County in 1860. Can anyone help? SEE BELOW!

I am a descendant of Thomas Patton and Edith Moberly who were in Clinton County,

Missouri in 1850. Thomas Patton died 7/1/1855 and is buried in Haynesville

Cemetery. Cemetery records indicate that Thomas was 50 when he died. A son,

Milton, also died in June, 1855 and is buried in the same cemetery. By 1860

Edith and her family were living in Leavenworth, Alexandria Twp, KS. One of

Thomas & Edith's children, Edward C. Patton was my great grandfather. He married

Annie Ester Burgess on February 14, 1867 in Leavenworth. In 1876 they traveled

the Santa Fe Trail to homestead in Hoehne, Las Animas County, Colorado. Edward

died in May 1880 of consumption and is buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery in

Trinidad, CO.

[72] Joseph Patton of Monroe Co Missouri

Joseph Patton was born in or around 1810 in Virginia, according to his 1850 Monroe Co MO census entry. He appears to have married Elizabeth ________ about 1832 in Virginia. She was born in Virginia in 1811. This couple began having children in 1833, all born in Virginia until 1839. Then children were born in Missouri beginning 1841. So in the census year of 1840 they may have been in either state, or perhaps en route. The only Joseph Patton of the right age found on the 1840 Va census clearly remained here through 1850. And I find no suitable Joseph in Mo in 1840. Of course if he were living with inlaws his name would not appear on the census.

1860- not in Monroe census.

1880- not indexed in Missouri. They probably moved west.

So this family is presently a MYSTERY. Any help will be appreciated! Here will be given their children as of 1850:

 a.  Martin C? Patton, b. 1833 Va

 b.  John W Patton, b 1837 Va

 c.   Hany?? M Patton (daughter), b 1839 Va

 d.  Nancy J Patton, b 1841 Mo

 e.  Martha H Patton, b 1843 Mo

 f.   Mary W Patton, b 1845 Mo

 g.  Joseph L Patton, b 1848 Mo (see 1880 Ray Co MO???)

[73] Pattons of Franklin Co Missouri/ Washington Co. Mo.

John Patton1 was born [by 1740], emigrated from near Belfast, Ireland to Allegheny City (sic) Pennsylvania when his son John was about 14 years of age. (479) His son John enlisted when very young in the RW so must have been about 16 in 1776, or born ca. 1760. They probably emigrated ca 1774.

The name of only one child is recorded:

John Patton2, born 1750-59 in Ireland, "was carefully educated, and when quite young enlisted as a soldier in the Revolutionary army, and at the battle of Plattsburg was promoted for gallant conduct. After the war he settled in Lancaster Pa. and married Nancy Governeur, a great niece of the English commander Lord Nelson of Trafalgar fame." 1 Eight children were born to this union. (479) About 1800 the family moved to Kaskaskia, Illinois. They later moved to the vicinity of Richwoods in Washington Co., Missouri. (479) This appears be the John Patton (age 70-80) found on the 1830 census of Washington County, Missouri, living alone. He would have died in the next few years; no search has been made for probate records.

There were eight children (479):

 a.   Charles Patton3, b. 1781 in Penna, eldest child, married Susanna Rogers of the Bonhomme settlement in Mo. in 1808. He was educated as a mechanical engineer. In Oct 1829 the heirs of Ezekial Rogers (dec’d) transferred land they had inherited. Heirs included Susanna and Charles Patton et al. He died on 2 May 1830 in Franklin Co., Missouri. Seven ch, all named as heirs in 1830, one living in 1895. (479) In the 1830 census his widow was head of household.

          1)      Emily Patton, b. 1809-10 MO, d. 1849, m. Judge David Sterigere, who died 1842?.

          2)      Dr. William Nelson Patton, b. 1813-14, m Margaret Spencer on ....., died 1857; five ch. Head of household in 1840 in Franklin Co. Mo. (Galena Twp.) William does not seem to be in the 1850 Missouri census- did they move away?

          3)      Eliza Ann Patton, b. [ca 1812], m. John R[ussell] Twitty in Franklin Co. on 22 July 1830. (The date often appears as 1835 but a lady who has looked at the original record says the last digit is smudged, and all surrounding marriages were dated 1830. ) John Russell Twitty died and left four orphans. Ambrose Twitty and another man became guardians. (850) In 1850 we find an A N Twitty in Franklin Co living near John Patton (schoolteacher).

1 Davidson Twitty --I know nothing else about him

2 John A Twitty (probably born 1837 ish)= I know nothing else about him

3 Emily Twitty (probably born 1843) - I know nothing else about her

4 Harrison R(ussell) (probably born about 1842). He served in the Civil War and a detailed service record is extant. (850)

          4)      Harriett Patton, 1818-ca 1880, m. (1) Dr Jesse Malone on 3 May 1842 in Crawford Co. Missouri. They are not found in the 1850 census. Some say he died in 1852., married (2) Benjamin Ruggles Five ch.

          5)      Franklin Patton4, DD, b. 1820 Washington Co Mo, d. 1895, Presbyterian minister, biog in (479) He attended Western Theological Seminary back in Alleghany, Pa. He marr. Martha Alexandria McCord on 29 Jan 1852 in Ponotee Co Ms. In 1852 he took charge of the Church at Cape Girardeaux, Mo. As a minister he relocated often. In 1880 he was living in Tupelo, Mississippi with his family. They had seven children, enumerated in reference (479).

          6)      Rebecca Patton, 1825-1912, m Peyton Johnson ... In 1895 she was the sole surviving sibling.

          7)      John R Patton, b. 1825-29, under guardianship in 1842, living 1853 Union, Franklin Co Mo.

          8)      ?Charles Patton b ..., a minor in 1842, in jail Union Co Mo 1861. We are not positive about this son at all. Speculation!

73.1

 b.      John Patton (III), b. 1785- 1789 Pa., possibly in Lancaster Co? He married Nancy Whitley, who was born in Frankfort, Ky. (479) She was 70 in 1860. The marriage would have taken place about the year 1809 based on when she began having children. Since the family was then living in either pre-territorial Ill or Mo, no marriage record would be extant. In Sept 1821 and Aug 1825 John Patton purchased two 80-acre tracts in Franklin Co Missouri; this was surely the John in this generation as his father would have then been aged and had little need for land. In 1830 he was living in Merrimac Twp., Franklin Co Mo, with seven sons and two daughters; an elderly man is also living with them. In 1840 a John Patton b 1780-89 was living in Galena Twp Franklin Co near Joseph Patton (see below). Then in 1850 we find no trace in Franklin Co. However they are found in Franklin Co in 1860, living in Prairie Twp. John surely died not long after this. Probate records (1875-76) show the following heirs of John Patton.

 1)      Wellington Patton, born about 1816 in Mo. It is interesting to speculate that John may have named a son Wellington in honor of the Duke of Wellington. His mother is said to have had ties to the English hero Lord Nelson, as stated above, and the name Nelson does come down in the family. Wellington married Judith ___ [age 26 in 1850]and left four children. He died prior to 1875.

          a.       Mary Patton, born ca 1846 Mo

          b.      Nancy Patton, born ca 1848 Mo

          c.       Elias Patton, born ca 1849Mo

          d.

  2)      Joseph Patton, b 1818, living w/ Montgomery in 1850. He could be named after Joseph Patton, brother of John (III). As noted, he sold his share in the estate in 1868.

  3)     Montgomery Patton, b 1822 Mo. , marr Saiah ring (Bowren etc) on 3 March 1850 in Ste Genevieve Co Mo. They had seven children including a John and a Charles. The naming pattern suggests that we are in fact dealing with the Patton line from John and Nancy Governeur.

          a)      Paul Patton, born ___, married Aurabelle Patton

 4)      John W. Patton was born in or around 1825 and was living at home with his parents in 1860. A man of this name was a schoolteacher in Franklin Co in 1850, perhaps this man. Please note John W. Patton receiving 2 shares. This is because on 11 April 1868, Joseph Patton "for and in Consideration of the Sum of Sixty Five Dollars to the Said Joseph Patton in hand paid by John W. Patton of the County of Franklin in the State of Missouri Granted Bargained and Sold and by these presents do Grant Bargain Sell unto the Said John W. Patton all my Right, title and interest in the Estate of John Patton and Nancy Patton as heirs thereto to all the Personal Estate , also all my Right and Interest to my undivided part of the Following described tracts or parcels of __ to wit Situate in the County of Franklin The East Half of the South West quarter of Section Four Township Forty Containing Eighty Acres, also, the west half of the South West quarter of Section Four of Township Forty, one East Containing Eighty one acres and fifty Six hundredths of an acre." John was living in 1891 as shown in an extant letter of that date.

  5)     Minerva Patton, born 1826 Mo, allegedly married Robert Lewis in ____ Co. He was born in 1816 in No Car; they were living in 1850 in Richwood Twp, Washington County MO, not far from [her brother] Thomas W Patton (b 1813 Ky). In her father’s estate papers she is identified as Nancy Rogers, formerly Nancy Patton; she probably married several times. By 1860 the Lewises were in Iron County Mo. She was alive in 1891 when her brother Montgomery’s wife died (letter).

  6)     Thomas W Patton, born 1813 in Mo, married Elinor (Ellen T) Lupton in Washington Co Missouri on 5 Dec 1835. She was born 1814 in England. They are on the 1840 and 1850 Washington Co Mo. censuses, then moved by 1860 to Crawford Co, where her family had moved.

 c.       Joseph Patton, b. 1787, marr. Elizabeth Hyde about 1819. Is there an official record? Joseph appears on both the 1830 and 1840 census in Franklin Co. Mo. In the latter year he had four daughters and four sons living at home. By 1850 this family disappears. One suspects a move toward the west. RESEARCH NEEDED.

Where is the Robert Patton family in 1840??

NOTES:

1. No record has appeared showing that a Governeur family lived in SE Pennsylvania at the time of the Revolution. This is a French name suggesting Huguenot descent? A few Goghenours, probably of German descent, were in Conestoga Twp by 1778.

2. Heirs of John Patton (born 1785, Pennsylvania; married Nancy ______) Died 1875/76:

"To John W. Patton (2 shares) $225.00, William Patton (1 share) $112.50, Minerva Center (one share) $112.50, Nancy Center (1 share) $112.50, Thomas Pattens heirs (3) each $37.50.  [74] Pattons of Dade, Greene, and Laclede Counties, Mo

George Patton was born ca 1800 in [Springfield Center1] Penna; when about three years of age his parents emigrated to St. Louis, Missouri, where George received his education. He then moved a bit west to Franklin Co Mo. (796) George is said (796) to have taught school for a number of years in Texas prior to settling down. This would be the 1820's, at which time the white population of Texas was numbered in a few thousands, making George a true pioneer here. George at some point met and married Talephene (Taphenus) Leeper , allegedly in Hawkins Co Tenn in 1826 (PEL, p. 795). [I believe that it is more likely that they married in Tipton Co. Tn.] This young lady was born on 20 April 1802 in Hawkins Co. Tenn (East Tenn), a dau of James and Ruth Leeper. The George Patton family is found in the 1830 census in Tipton Co., Tenn, which is located in the far western part of Tenn. Listed close to him is Hugh Leeper, probably kin to Taphenus. George Patton was on the 1837 Tipton Co tax return, one of few to survive from this decade. [Tipton deeds?]

About 1838-9 George moved to Greene Co Missouri. In Dec 1839 George executed a deed to Daniel D Berry in Greene Co. Mo- around this period three other deeds were executed here to Berry, all by men named Leeper. It appears that this represents a sale of land from the estate of Talaphene’s father (see Leeper article). The George Patton family appears in 1840 in Greene Co Mo 2 (southwest Mo, adj Dade Co), nearone uunidentified Samuel Patton, a bit younger. The age distribution of George’s children matches the known children of Talaphene in 1850 almost perfectly George Patton died in Febr.1845 in Barton Co Mo (796) and his widow appears in 1850 in that county with children. She was head of household in Horse Creek Twp, Dade Co. in 1870 with several grown children. She died 5 Aug 1885 in Dade Co. Mo.

a.     James L. Patton, born 1828 Tipton Co. Tenn., appears in the 1830 census as the only child. He is not found in 1840, probably living with relatives. I cannot find him in 1850. He married Araminty Sarah Angeline Akeman in Crawford Co., Missouri on 2 Nov. 1852. They had six children prior to his untimely death in 1864 in Dade Co. It is unsure if his death may have been due to military causes. I could not readily find his family in 1870. Two of his sons, John Thomas “Crooked John” and Seigle, went to Laclede Co Mo and married Chambers girls. Descendants of this man say he was brother to Warren J and Joseph A Patton and have Bible records to document this. Arominty was born May 1835 in TN and died 19 July 1907 in Arcola, Dade Co, MO. They had the following kids;

         a.    Infant. Born about 1854, died as infant.

         b.    William H. Patton. born 5 Sept 1854 in Dade Co, MO and died 7 Jan 1902 in Carter, Springer, Co.Okla and was buried 9 Jan 1902 in Methodist Church, Cem. Springer Co, Okla.

         c.    James R. Patton. born 9 Apr 1856 in Dade Co, MO. and died 9 Apr 1927 in Carter, Springer Co, Okla and was buried 11 Apr 1927 in Methodist Church, Cem. Springer Co, Okla.

         d.    John Thomas Patton. born 15 Jan 1859 in Dade Co, MO. and died 17 Apr 1930 in Carter, Springer Co, Okla. and was buried 19 Apr 1930 in Methodist Church, Cem, Springer Co, Okla. His nickname was "Crooked John". He married Mariah L. Chambers in Laclede Co Mo. on 24 March 1879, living adjacent to [W] Joseph Patton in 1880 in Union Twp, Laclede Co. Mo..

         e.    Mary Ella Patton, born 1860 in Dade Co, MO. and died before 1927.

         f.    Seigle P. Patton. born 4 Mar 1863 in Dade Co, MO. and died 18 Dec 1934 in Carter, Springer Co, Okla. and was buried 20 Dec 1934 in Methodist Church, Cem, Springer Co, Okla. He married Samarian Chambers in [Laclede Co?] on 18 Dec 1882; they had 12 children, 9 of which were born in Laclede Co.

1. Darren Durman says he was born at Springfield Center; I cannot verify this nor find such a place on a map.

2. Ref. (796) says three years after his marriage George moved to Green Co Mo and then to Dade Co Mo. This is probably incorrect, as later census records show his later children all being born in Tenn.

 b.      Oliver Patton, b. 1826/1830[Tipton Co.] Tenn, found as O. G. Patton living in Dade Co Mo. in 1880, married and with family (age 54, b Tenn). He stated both his parents were born in Penn. He married Martha _____ about 1864; two ch in 1880.

          1)   Charles Patton, b. 1875 Mo

          2)   R ? Patton

 c.      Warren [Joseph] Patton, b. 1832 Tenn. According to the family, this man was named Warren Joseph Patton, and went by the name of Joe. This appears to be the gentleman named Joseph Patton who married Margaret C Moore in Jan 1854 in Laclede Co Mo. This couple is found in Laclede Co in 1870 and 1880 but apparently not in 1860. This man died in 1883. The counties are both in southern Mo, and it seems that two sons of James L Patton went there to live near to their uncle Joseph after 1880. We know Joseph was in the Civil War in the Dallas Co Mo Home Guard and in "A" Co. 73rd Enrolled Missouri Militia Inf. Margaret applied for his Civil War Pension Nov 1891 Pension #531003. She did not get the Pension, because this company was never made a Federal unit. From what little info that we got from the National Archives, we did find out he died 10 July 1883 but nothing more. We found Land Sale papers were Margaret sold land in Dallas Co. MO. in 1893 and in 1910 was living with her youngest son Leander in Laclede, Co. MO. Joseph and Margaret had eight children.

           1)     Samuel K. Patton, b.Oct 1854 Mo

           2)     Sarah Ellen b. May 1857

           3)     William (Bill) R. b. abt 1859. He is the only child we have not found.

           4)     John Wesley Patton, b. 1862

           5)     Joseph E. b. abt 1865

           6)     Charles b. Mar 1868

           7)     Mary Jane b. abt 1870-71

           8)     Leander Patton, b. abt 1875

 d.      Joseph [A] Patton, b. Sept 1835 in Tenn (per 1900 census); still at home, unmarried, in 1870, at which time his age was put at 31 (somebody was guessing). He never married; in 1900 he was in Dade Co and his sister Martha plus a nephew Charles W (b Sept 1874) lived with him. He died on 24 June 1903 in Cedarville, Dade Co. Mo.

 e.      John [M]Patton, b. 1834 Tenn/Mo, unmarried, at home in Dade Co 1870.

 f .     Nancy [J] Patton, b. 1837 Tenn; not at home 1870, maybe married?

 g.      Martha [C.] Patton, b. 11 April 1845 in Mo [Tenn??], single and at home in 1870.

DISCUSSION-

If the county history (796) is to be believed, we need to find George Patton’s parents in St Louis in the period 1805-1820. A John Patton of St Louis District is named in the “Memorials for Gov Wilkinson” in the Carter Papers, in Dec 1805. (Eddlemon 1766-1839 Vol I p 135. This might be the same John Patton, “a printer, many years’ resident” whose brief death norice appeared in the 25th Nov 1828 issue of the Missouri Republican. This is merely a clue- are there any estate probate records for this period?

A William Patton executed deeds in Greene Co about 1840 also. Wm was born in 1800 in NC and an Alexander Patton, age 38 lived with him, suggesting affinity w/ the Orange Co NC line. Prob no relation

The Leeper family originated in Scotland and was in County Donegal by 1610. The first immigrant recorded in Pennsylvania was Gawin Leeper who was present on the tax list of New London Twp., Chester Co Pa. in 1719. A Gavin Leiper was born about 1696 in Hamilton. Lanark, where others of this name are recorded later. A useful summary of the earlier Chester Co affiliations is given in an appendix.

GENERATION I

1. Robert Leeper was born 16__, married Margaret ____. Robert died in Ireland and his widow Margaret came to America. Robert had brothers Gawin and John, and a sister Jean who md. Joseph Mcleduff (will Sept 1750 Chester Co Penna. Robert's widow Margaret married a McMillan or McMullan and left her will naming her son-in-law Robert Curry and sons Andrew, James and John Leeper. We shall omit discussion of the other Leeper lines here.

GENERATION II

2. James Leeper , born ca 1720, a son of Robert Leeper. James Lipard (Leeper) of Naked Creek, Augusta Co Va, was mentioned in the Sept 1750 will of Joseph Muckleduff of Chester Co Pa. James was in Augusta Co by 1746 when he was granted land on Naked Creek, probably earlier. On 16 May 1759he sold a tract of 353 acres on Naked Creek of North River (part of two patents dated 1742 and 1746) to his son Gawen for the nominal sum of 5 pounds. (Aug Co d b 2:118) On the same date he sold another tract to his son James Jr also for 5 pounds. James died in early 1763 intestate, and on 21 June his widow posted bond as administratrix. On 22 Oct 1765 the settlement of the estate of James Leeper was recorded (will book 1: 433); heirs named were five sons, four sons-in-law, and a daughter Margaret Jr. (I have not worked out the names of his daughters.)

GENERATION III

3.    James Leeper Jr

4.   Gawen Leeper, born est 1740, as mentioned above was granted a deed of gift from his father James Leeper of Naked Creek in 1759. Gawen married Margaret [Brown] and had four children before coming to what is now Hawkins Co Tenn. They reportedly moved to Tenn about 1778. They there belonged to New Providence Presbyterian Church. Children, as reported on Genforum by: Billie Curry Steeley msg 249 (1999)

          8.    Jane Leeper, b. ca 1767, who married Felix Canada Brown

           9.   James Leeper, b. ca 1769, d. after 13 Apr 1826. Married Ruth [Long?] (1770-1780, d. after 1840)

         10.   Hugh Leeper, b. ca 1771 m. Ruth Long; they lived in Riceville, McMinn Co Tenn.

         11.   Isabella Leeper b. ca 1773 m. Robert Long; lived Grainger Co Tenn.

 5.     Andrew Leeper, born by 1734; he and his wife Jane sold a tract in Beverly Manor (corner to Nicholas Leeper) to Gawen Leeper in Feb 1755. (Deed bk 1: 544) He left issue.

 6.     Nicholas Leeper. In Aug 1751 James Leeper sold land to Nicholas, who lived in the Beverly Manor.

GENERATION IIII

 9. James Leeper, born in about 1765-69 in Va, and was of age in 1790 as he was on the list of voters in Hawkins Co Tenn in 1790. He married Ruth ......... and had children named in his will. His will was dated 13 April 1826, probated in Hawkins Co. Tenn. Ruth was a head of household in 1830 in Hawkins Co Tenn; later she and some of the children moved to Missouri. Ruth was in Greene Co Missouri by 1840. NEED his will. I will list his purported children below but the dates given for some do not tally well.

 12     John Leeper

13     James Leeper Jr. See 1830 Henry Co Tenn census?

?       Francis Leeper, (1771- 1831?), marr Elizabeth Littleton; two ch. On 1830 Hawkins Co census, age 50-60' if this man WAS a son of James, his father must have been born much earlier than 1765!!

14     Hugh Leeper was b.14 Sept.1783, Hawkins Co. TN; d. 3 March 1851, Greene Co. MO. Buried in Leeper Cemetery in NW Greene Co. MO. Married (1) Elizabeth ?? [b.11 Nov. 1787,Knox Co. TN. d.3 Jan. 1829.] Hugh was listed on the 1830 Hawkins Co census (0131.001- 2001), not yet remarried. He married (2) Mary A. ??, [ b.ca 1794- was 56 on 1850 MO census] (Genforum post 478) Children: Alexander, James, Francis (Frank), George, John, Margaret, Louisa, Sarah (Sally).

 15.    Gawen Leeper, born about 1800, evid marr abt 1829 as suggested by 1830 Hawkins census. A man of this name was born 22 July 1804 and died 20 April 1864 in Hawkins Co Tenn- was this a cousin?

 16.    Taphena (Josephine) Leeper, born 20 April 1802 in Hawkins Co Tn., marr George PATTON about 1827, most likely in Hawkins or Tipton Co Tenn. George was a teacher, so surely moved around a bit. Where did they meet? In 1830 they were living in Tipton Co Tenn, far west of Hawkins Co., and a Hugh Leeper (living alone, apparently her cousin) lived nearby.

 17.    Ruth Ann Leeper, born est 1813 md James Cawfield in Greene Co Missouri on 15 Aug 1833.

Gawin Leeper and family--Chester Co., PA

Posted by: Tom GoldrupDate: March 08, 2001 msg 539 of 797

The Leeper family originated in Scotland and moved to Northern Ireland. They settled in County Donegal by 1610. From there, our earliest known relative to come to America was Gawin Leeper, who settled in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He first appears there on the tax list in 1719 and resided in the settlement of New London. No other Leepers appear on these tax rolls until 1734 when Andrew is listed in New London along with Gawin. A James Leeper also appears that year in West Nottingham. These people appear each additional year through 1738. In 1739 James is missing and an Alexander replaces him in West Nottingham. In 1740 there are three Leepers listed in the Chester County tax list, namely Gawin in New London, and Alexander and James in West Nottingham. By 1748 (and through 1758) Andrew appears each year as a resident of West Nottingham, and James reappears there in 1757 and 1758.

It is known that our branch of the family is related to them because of the wills that are left, one mentioning James Leeper of Naked Creek in Virginia (who is our ancestor).

Gawin Leeper is married to Isabelle (maiden name unknown). From his will dated June 13, 1741, we find that he has a son named Alexander. He has a "cousin" (which probably referred to a nephew as that term was commonly used that way in those days) James Leeper who had a son Gawin. He mentions his "cousin" Andrew being in Nottingham. He leaves ten pounds to Blanch (Leeper) Patrick. Lastly, he mentions his sister Jean Muckleduff. The way he refers to various items that belonged to his son Alexander makes it sound as though he is dead.

74.4

Gawin's wife Isabelle dated her will on October 9, 1742. She confirms the theory that her son Alexander is probably dead as she leaves all her estate to "cousins" Mary Piper and Joan Summerill. The will of Alexander McKee dated September 3, 1748 mentions his daughter Margaret and her husband James, along with their son Alexander Leeper and their "other children." This is undoubtedly the James Leeper in the tax lists of West Nottingham, Chester County in 1735.

Gawin's sister Jane was married a Mr. Muckleduff. It sounds like the Joseph Muckleduff who wrote his will in September of 1750 is a young man, and is apparently their son. He names neither wife nor children, but leaves his home in the Manor of Springton to his brother Samuel Muckleduff. He left 100 dollars to his mother and five dollars to a Susanna Armstrong. He also mentioned that several slaves are to be freed at a certain age. He also left articles to Andrew Leeper of Nottingham, and to his son James Leeper. The stipulation in his will that ties this family definitely to our Leeper family states "To James Lipard (Leeper) of Naked Creek in Virginia my beaver hat and wigs, and to his son Andrew my gun." Our ancestor James Leeper, along with his son Andrew, lived on Naked Creek in Augusta County, Virginia at this time.

Andrew Leeper of Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania, dated his will on April 9, 1771. This is the Andrew named as a "cousin" in Gawin's will. Andrew mentions his wife Elizabeth, daughters Margaret (wife of Mr. Porter, Mary (wife of William Ramsay, and Isabel (wife of James Maxwell. He also mentions his son James who "hath been long absent".

[75] Pattons of Scott Co Mo (SE corner)

children of ----- Patton, who was probably born about 1820-30 and was apparently living in Breathitt Co Ky prior to 1850:

a. William Henry Patton was born on 14 Aug. 1853 in Mo., per 1910 census.

  1860?

  1870?

  1880?

William only went to school for about a year as he was tongue-tied and spoke with a lisp so other children made fun of him and he quit school. He could just sign his name. He became a carpenter and builder around Sikeston and Oran, Missouri.

He married first ..... He married second Martha Ann Lunsford Boyd in Sikeston, Scott Co, on 26 Dec 1898. He does not appear to be on 1900 census in Mo. He worked as a deep sea diver for a while and may have moved around a bit. In 1910 and 1920 on census here. He died 19 Feb 1934 in Fredericktown, Mo. Names of his parents do not appear on his death record. His daughter Anna is still living (2000) but she does not recall Wm's parents names. She thought Wm was born in Decoy, Breathitt Co Ky, but according to the census it was Wm's FATHER who was from Ky. Anna mentioned a George Patton and said the family lived around slaves and told of incessant feuding so this does sound like "bloody" Breathitt County. She also gave limited information on Wm's siblings.

 1)    son by first wife, lived with second household

 2)    son by first wife

.........

 1)    John Henry Patton, b. 23 March 1900, d Fredericktown, Mo, never married. Fredericktown is in Madison Co a few miles west of a small town called Patton.

 2)    George Thomas Patton, b. ..., died about age 5.

 3)    Anna Ruth Patton, b. 28 March 1906 Oran, Mo., married Arnold Gale McGee ca 1927. Her son-in-law Dale Landon is researching this line. e mail shedoer@home.com

[76] Pattons of BOONE CO MO

FRANCIS Patton was born in the 1790's, married first (unknown) about 1816. To judge by where his children were born he lived in Ky until 1825, came to Mo, returned briefly to Ky and then and by 1830 was permanently resident in Boone Co Mo., which is on the Missouri River mid-way through the state. Francis marr. Elizabeth Jackston in Boone Co on 16 July 1837, she being his second wife. She was born about 1809 in Ky. Francis was in Boone Co by 1830, here in 1840 with a large family. He died by 1850, likely about 1842 as his last child was born in 1841. In 1850 his widow was head of household and a presumed son by his previous marriage lived next door.

The only Francis Patton listed in the 1820 Ky census lived in Woodford Co. He was 26 to 45 years old and had a son and two daughters in 1820. Thie age-distribution matches well with Francis Patton of 1830 Boone Co Mo. Further study warranted.

 a.   William Patton, born 1821 Ky

 b.   James A Patton, born 1826 Ky

 c.   Susan Patton, born 1827 Mo

 d.   Henry C Patton, born 1828 in Ky; marr record not found

 e.   Lewis Claxton Patton, born 1831 in Mo

 f.    Susan Patton, b 1834 Mo

 g.   Francis M Patton, b 1837 in Mo (prob Francis Marion)

 h.   George W Patton, b 1838 Mo

 i.    Martha A Pattopn, b 1841 Mo

It is perhaps interesting to take note that in the decade of the 1820's several other Pattons are mentioned in the Boone Co records. The combined land and pro[erty tax lists for 1821 and 1825 mention Hugh Patton, John Patton, Thomas Patton, William Patton, and Martha Patton.

The first four were brothers- John and Thomas Patton were in Jackson Co in 1830, see section [39] Hugh Patton was in Jackson Co in 1830 also, same line. Jackson is also on the Missouri River, but on the western border of Missouri. It would APPEAR that this group of Pattons was transitory and unrelated to Francis Patton. Marge Braswell has studied this line for years and has not found a tie to Francis to my knowledge.

[77] Pattons of Randolph Co Missouri

Francis Patton. born 1774 allegedly in Virginia, marr Margaret Benton ca 1804, presumably in Va. She was from _________ . Later census records suggest that Francis was born in North Carolina. Francis Patton Jr, born c 1774, was in the 1800 Burke Co census, already with a family. Their eldest son was born in 1809 in Virginia, according to our reference so Francis SHOULD be on the 1810 Va census. (My copy of this schedule may be incomplete- not found). “The family moved to Kentucky and later moved to Missouri.”

1820- no Francis Patton head of household in Va. The only Francis in Ky was in Woodford Co, b 1775-94. This man had a son under 10 and two daughters under ten so probably married about 1810. If the dates are off a bit this MIGHT be the man in question; he does not appear in Ky in 1830. (No census for Mo yet- formed in 1822).

1830 Francis Patton, b 1790s in Boone Co Mo. This man had remarried in 1837, had five boys and two girls; obviously his birth year (if correct as given in the census) is too late to be Francis b 1774. This man is still here in 1840. SEE section 76.

1839 George Benton Patton md. Lucy Ann Melton on 12 April in Randolph Co Missouri

1840 Francis Patton b [1774 NC] in Randolph Co. with a younger couple in their 20's, could be son and wife or oher ch. George B not a head of household. A John M Patton listed nearby.

1846 G B Patton witnessed a will in Randolph Co Mo

1850 F[rancis] Pattona nd wife Margaret [Benton] still alive.

      Where is George Benton Patton??

1852 will of Francis Patton. He named his son George B Patton exec and named his wife- no other heirs named, suggesting a small family.

1871 Geo Benton Patton died.

NOTE that other Pattons in Randolph Co came from North Carolina- these are descendants of Thomas Patton, 1726-1808 Buncombe Co NC. This line is discussed on pp 28.16-28.19 of the Compendium. This line is pretty well-worked out by now but there are some uncertainties as to a controversial JOHN PATTON, possibly an oldest son of Thomas, who might have been born about 1750. Some think he went to Alabama?

[78] Pattons of Bollinger Co Missouri (from Floyd County Ky)

Andrew Jackson Patton , “one of the prominent and public-spirited men of Perry Township, [was] a representative of one of the earliest pioneer families of Tippecanoe County. Mrs. Patton was born in Floyd County Kentucky, March 10, 1816, a son of William and Jane (McBroom) Patton.” (111) His parents moved in 1819 to Indiana and William died in August 1820. Jane then remarried as she had three small sons to raise, and the new family moved in 1827 to Tippecanoe County. In 1838 the family went to Arkansas, then to Stoddard Co Missouri and two years later to Cape Girardeau County, where Andrew’s stepfather died. Andrew married Eppie Masters, a native of No Carolina, and daughter of Daniel and Sally Masters, about 1842 in Cape Girardeau Co Mo. She had two sons by Andrew but evidently died in early 1849. Daniel Masters was born about 1790 in Lincoln Co NC, a son of Jacob and Catherine Masters. His brother David Masters was born in 1788 and married Ann ____; their daughter Margaret (b 1824 Mo) later married Andrew J Lincoln (see below). The Masters, Patton and Lincoln families had various intermarriages later on. Andrew was unable to raise the boys himself, and left them to be raised by others.

“Andrew J. Patton was married December 28, 1849 to Miss Mary Girrard, a native of Perry Township, who was born August 30, 1830, her parents, Joseph and Ann (Donelson) Girrard, having settled in Perry Township in the fall of 1828. They formerly resided near Troy, in Miami County, Ohio.” (111) They were the parents of nine children. Andrew remained in Perry Twp until 1856, in which year he removed to Cedar County, Iowa, and later bought land in Jones County. However he returned to Tippecanoe Co the next year where he remained. He was a farmer and justice of the peace. He was living in 1888.

Sons of Andrew J and Eppie Masters Patton:

a. William David Patton, born in Mo on 8 Sept 1843 (date on his tombstone). He was evidently named after his paternal grandfather and his uncle. Not yet found in 1860 census. He served in the Civil War in the 7th Union Cavalry and soon after is found in the 1870 census of Bollinger Co- worker at a saw mill. He married Malinda C Lincoln in Bollinger Co on 8 Sept 1867. She was born Aug 1849 also in Mo., a dau of Andrew Jackson Lincoln and Margaret Masters. Lincoln was b 22 June 1822 in Cape Gir. Co (Anc File) Both were living here in 1880 and 1900. She stated that they had been married 33 years, and she was the mother of eleven children, eight of which were living in 1900. 1.NOTE- in 1880 and 1900 Harvey said his father was born in Indiana, Mother in Mo. Wm D said in 1880 his father was born in Mo. The problem here is that William was a small boy when his father left, and the remaining in-laws only knew that Andrew was from Indiana, they did not realize he had moved there from Ky at the age of 3.

2. Andrew’s brother David marr Deborah Neal in Stoddard County before he, also went back to Indiana. He was a respected minister.

[79] Other Missouri PATTON lines

A. Pattons of Ray Co Missouri.

By 1850 we find records of six (6) unrelated Patton lines who mostly passed through although several families did remain as late as the 1880's.

(1) In 1830 we find two Pattons households here. James E Patton, b 1799 Buncombe Co NC is discussed on p 28.19. (2) Rev Daniel Patton, b 1799 Buncombe Co NC(Tamlacht Ire line) is discussed on page 11.9. These men are not related!

In 1840 we find that Jas E is still here prior to his move to Texas. (3) Jas Patton, b 1803 Tn was a first cousin of James E and is found on p 28.18. Magdaline Patton is here, appar sister in law of James 1803. And then in Fishing River Twp we find (4) Josiah Patton, b 1799 NC; this man has just moved in from Orange Co North Carolina. He is unrelated to the prior two Patton lines. He appears to be the only son of Matthew Patton of Orange Co by his first wife Jane Patton (who died in 1800). See p 43.8 for discussion.

In 1850 there are new Pattons here. (5) Thomas S Patton, b. about 1812 in Kentucky, a tailor, is head of family. His wife Susan White, b 1820 Ky, he married on 17 Nov. 1842. We need to figure out which of the dozens of Ky Patton lines he came from. Their young children in 1850:

 a. Mary J Patton, b 1845 Mo

 b. Susan E Patton, b 1849 Mo.

Also in 1850 note is taken of (6) Joseph Patton, born 1812 Tenn, married Ursula Wilhite (no record found). This man was a son of Robert Patton and Wellmet Thornbrough (m 1804 Jefferson Co Tenn). and this line is discussed on page 48.2

1830- John and Joseph Patton living in Franklin Co. John had SEVER sons. Not sure this is same man tho!

1840? A John and Joseph Patton are in Franklin Co Mo, born in 1780s and 1790' respectively.

Marge B says that Willington Patton was a son of John and Nancy Whitley Patton.

This [presumed] couple is found living in 1850 in Platte Co Missouri with two teenage sons and three younger children. They lived in Lee Twp, next to Joseph Patton. Again in 1860 both sets of Patton families are in the same township. PLATTE Co is in the NW part of the state, as far as possible from the SE corner where we pick up the following:

In addition to the children known to be living with John and Nancy in census records, J Mieras says that there was an older son:

a. Montgomery Patton, born on 30 April 1822 in Mo., married Sarah A Boring on 3 March 1850 in St Francois Co. Sarah was born 15 March 1832 in Franklin Co Missouri. This young couple was living in Madison Co Mo in 1850. Of great significance, also living with them was Joseph Patton, age 32 (hence born 1828) also born in Mo. Montgomery was a merchant. In 1860 Montgomery was living in Ironton Town, Iron Co. He served in the Civil War, papers in file. 1880-

1900-

Montgomery died on 25 Oct 1905 in the Confederate Veteran’s Home in Higgensville Mo. . There were nine children.
