Introduction

The following paper discusses the lines of William Patton Sr and Joseph Patton. William was older and was born in Northern Ireland about 1720, Joseph was younger and was probably his brother. We will first mention what can be learned about the Pennsylvania origins of these men, and then trace them in Bourbon and adjacent Harrison County in Kentucky.

These lines have been rather extensively studied for years, as the descendants are very numerous, and long and detailed accounts exist. (737, 739) Among others, Elaine Elliott, first editor of the “Patton/Patten Exchange Letter” has worked out these lines in much detail. However, others using her work have mixed up some of the cousins (an easy thing to do), and existing writings lack some exact dates which are available from tombstone records for many of the descendants. In addition, some of the Ohio lines have not been traced in detail Since your author is able to supply some of these deficiencies from the wealth of records available at the Western Reserve Historical Society, he presents this short paper with a view of trying to set the record straight on the earlier generations of these lines, down to 1850. After this time the number of descendants goes into the thousands (counting female lines) and others are welcome to pursue these as they see fit.

Most of the information regarding the Penna origins of this group has not presented in detail prior to this publication.

A second William Patton, veteran of the Revolution, arrived in Bourbon County in 1795 and left descendants. Although apparently unrelated to the lines being here discussed, this line is mentioned in an appendix to this chapter in a little detail, as researchers are apt to confound the various men named William Patton who lived in this area from 1795-1810.

Pattons of Antrim and Toboyne Twps., Cumberland Co Penna.

After the erection of Lancaster Co. Pennsylvania in 1730 a number of new townships were established to the west of the Susquehanna River, to accomodate the needs of the steady flow of settlers into the area. By 1749 the westernmost of these townships, the frontier, was a huge area called Antrim Twp. Over the years after this this area was subdivided many times and now includes several whole counties including Cumberland (1750), Franklin (1784), Adams (1800) and Perry (1820) Counties.

By the time of the American Revolution this was all Cumberland Co., and we find Pattons living in several townships. The land records of Cumberland do not show that most of these early Pattons actually purchased land, and it seems clear that they remained in this area only a few years before moving on to more promising areas.

ANTRIM TWP.

[Lt.] Joseph Patton appears in the tax lists of this township in 1781, taxed on 200 acres, total value of property was $830. (756) Also on this list was a Robert Patton (freeman, hence unmarried). Names also found on this list are Humphrey Fullerton, James Poe, James Dixon, Jacob Stotler, Jacob Grindle, Joseph Lowrey, and George Gordon. Each of these men also appears together as an officer or enlisted man in several extant Rev War Militia muster rolls. For example, in Dec 1778 the Cumberland 2nd Battalion shows Capt. John Jack's Co. included Gordon and Grindle, plus Joseph McClintock. (Pa Arch 5:vol 6, 169). On 23 Oct 1777 the roster of Cumberland 8th Battalion, 4th Co showed that Capt William Long's immediate subordinate was First Lt. Joseph Patton; this same unit in 1780 still had Patton as second-in command, with privates from several townships. (Pa Arch 5: vol 6, 519, 556). In 1782 Joseph was First Lt of the 3rd Co., 8th Cumberland Battalion, with Robert Patton a Pvt. in his company. The identity of Robert Patton is unknown.

Joseph would have been born prior to about 1757 to be an officer in 1777. It has been mentioned above that Joseph McClintock was in a militia unit along with Antrim men; it appears that McClintock was himself from Toboyne Twp., a bit north of Antrim.

A Joseph Patton, younger than the man discussed above1, married Margaret McClintock, daughter of Joseph McClintock amd Elizabeth Torrence, on 18 Sept. 1783 in Centre Presbyterian Church, Sherman's Valley, Toboyne Twp. Records of the two Rev's Linn, pastors of this church have survived and are available on the Perry Co Pa website. (741) The Joseph who married Margaret went after the RW to Bourbon Co. Va (later Ky), and his gravestone has the birthdate 1 Oct. 1759. He appears to be the oldest son of William Patton, to be discussed below, and hence this younger Joseph was the nephew of the older man.

The line of the senior Joseph Patton will be discussed below on page 56.10.

1 Lt Joseph Patton owned a large and prosperous farm in 1781; it would be highly unusual for a man to own a large farm just starting out in life, several years prior to marriage.

PATTONS OF TOBOYNE TWP., CUMBERLAND CO PENNA.

Present Toboyne Twp. is located in the western end of Perry Co Pa.; this is a very remote area walled on the northwest by the Tuscarora Mt and southeast by Kittatinny Mt. The main stream draining the valley is Sherman's Creek, which runs roughly east and west. The oldest church in the area is Centre Presbyterian Church. This area was settled by the 1770's and several Pattons were among earliest settlers.

The population of this township has always been extremely sparse, and due to this fact neighbors tended to intermarry, and when they did migrate from the area, they often did so in related family groups. A common migration path from this valley was to mideastern Kentucky and southern Ohio in the period 1790-1800. (See the Perry Co Pa website for many details.)

The 1779 tax lists of the township shows William Patton with 150 acres, Thomas Patton with 100 acres and a landless George Patton. Living here at the same time was a large contingent of McClintocks, including Daniel, Wm Sr., Wm Jr., Wm (blacksmith), Hugh, Robert, John, and in 1781 also Joseph McClintock. (Pa Arch. Ser 3 vol xx, p 224). It is likely that these earliest Pattons were kin, maybe brothers; we shall discuss each in turn as far as surviving records permit.

GEORGE PATTON

No surviving Cumberland Co Penna militia muster lists appear to mention George Patton. George Patton was still in Toboyne in 1780 with 222 acres; however no land surveys are recorded for him in early Cumberland records. It would thus appear that George Patton had settled on land in Toboyne, staying here for only about two years, and then moved on without formally taking up the land he lived on. This was common practice in the earliest days. This George Patton had to have been born prior to 1758 to be on the tax list in 1779; the fact he lived near several other Pattons in this very remote valley suggests he was kin, possibly a brother. We may hazard a guess that he had recently arrived from abroad, from Ireland or possibly Scotland, as his name does not appear to show up in earlier SE Penna records.

What happened to George Patton after 1780? His name is not found in any other Cumberland Co tax lists, which are rather complete. In 1799 a George Patten and Charles Patten of Washington Co., Maryland sold a grey mare and a brown horse to William Hughes. This area is located a few miles south of the area we have been discussing. It will later be shown that these men moved shortly thereafter to Clark County, Ky. It is possible that George Patton of Toboyne may have been the father of George and Charles Patton of Washington Co, who were born about 1779 and 1778 respectively. It is also possible that the older George Patton may have died in the interval between 1780 and 1799. The probate records and orphans court records of Cumberland Co Pa fail to show any trace of George Patton, as well as those of Washington Co. Md. So at present we must be content to leave things as stated above. The line of the Pattons of Washington Co Md who went to Ky will be discussed in a separate chapter [57] of this COMPENDIUM.

[56]                                                        WILLIAM PATTON SR.

William Patton is listed in the Toboyne Twp. tax list in 1780 with 151 acres and again in 1781. The last year William Patton appears in Toboyne tax lists is 1785. William was thus in the Sherman Valley at least between 1779 and 1785. He then moved to Va about the same time various McClintock kin moved, and appears in Bourbon Co Va tax lists after 1787. After Kentucky achieved statehood in 1792 Bourbon Co. was in Kentucky, being in themiddle section of that new state.

A William and Thomas Patton appear together in a summer 1782 Cumberland Co militia scouting payroll (Penna Arch. 5:6:653); this seems to be a hastily gathered company of men from various areas so we cannot say where the men were from.*

In 1779 and maybe later William HOLLIDAY appears on Toboyne tax lists. This man, or a namesake, married Martha Patton, dau of William Patton, reportedly in 1778 "in Penna". This is good corroboration that Wm Patton and Wm Holliday may have come together to Ky.

The William Patton Sr line is discussed at length, below.

THOMAS PATTON

As mentioned above, a Thomas Patton was listed in Toboyne tax lists in 1779, and MAY have served in the revolution as a private in 1782. After 1779 Thomas no longer was taxed in Toboyne. (A different man of this name lived in Tyrone Twp. a bit to the north, but he was here consistently before 1778 and left a will dated 29 July 1785; he was not a resident of Toboyne.) The fate of this man is unknown, but the fact he lived here close to George Patton suggests affinity.

      *********

Summary

The above is preliminary and needs further study. But it supports the claim that a William Patton, born estimated 1725, did live in Teboyne Twp during the period when his son Joseph is said to have married miss Margaret McClintock. There is no question that men of these names appear in Bourbon Co Ky. records beginning soon after the formation of this county in 1786. This man, in addition to a Joseph also had sons named Thomas and William, suggesting a family naming pattern.

*Applicants to the DAR have claimed that William Patton (d 1795 Bourbon Co Ky) served in the RW under Capt Hugh McAllister's Co of Cumberland Co Pa Militia. Comparison of the sixty names on this muster list in 1781 with tax lists of this year very clearly shows that almost every man in this unit was from West Pennsboro Twp (Pa Archives Ser 3 vol 20 p 501). The Wm Patton on this list wrote a will dated 1796 and it was witnessed by Jared Graham, also on the muster list. So this was NOT the man who moved to Ky. I have been told that Wm of Bourbon got several land warrants in Ky for Rev War service- need to document this.

[56] Pattons of Bourbon Co. and Harrison Co. Ky.

Bourbon Co., in Eastern Ky., is one of the oldest counties, formed in 1785 from Fayette (formed 1780 from Kentucky Co. Va.). It was the parent of Mason Co. (1788), Clark Co. (1792) in which other Pattons were active, and Harrison (1793).

An early settler was William Patton Sr, born (est.) 1725, reportedly in Armagh, Ireland. William came to Americaca. 1765, settling first in Pennsylvania, reportedly in Cumberland Co Pa., where he is said to have participated in the struggle for independence. As we have discussed above, William Patton lived in Toboyne Twp., Cumberland Co., along Sherman's Creek, in the company of various McClintocks; two of his children married McClintocks. He was on tax lists here until 1785, then headed for Virginia, settling in Bourbon Co. Va. (Ky after 1792) in 1786. In the latter year he purchased land there on Stoner's Fork of Licking River (DB A: 71). He signed his will on 31 July 1794 and it was proved in May 1795. His wife predeceased him. For many years applicants to the DAR* have claimed that his wife was named Martha Fullerton. In a thoughtful article in PEL [II-264], Elaine Elliott points out that ten of William's eleven children had a daughter named Sally and suggests therefore that his wife was more likely named Sally (Dunlap?). Perhaps his wife's mother was named Martha (Fullerton); it is very common for a name to be remembered over several generations, but placed in the wrong generation when constructing a genealogy, many years later. The eldest dau. of William was named Martha, and a common naming pattern is to name the eldest daughter after the maternal grandmother. Children, (per his 1794 will) are given as follows. Each line will be discussed in detail below.

 a.    Joseph Patton Sr.2, b. 1 Oct. 1759 (Ire/ Pa?), married Margaret McClintock in 1783 in Pa. He died intestate, after 1820. See below.

 b.    Martha Patton, b. 1754 prob Ire., marr William Holliday (1755-1812) ca. 1778, died 1816 ..... Seven ch listed by E. Elliott.

 c.    Rebecca Patton, b. 1755-58, married Joseph McClintock 18 Sept. 1785 in Bourbon Co. Ky. She died after 1825 in Nicholas Co Ky. Her husband was born 1744 Cumberland Co. Pa, died 1825 Nicholas Co. Ky.

 d.    Sarah "Sally" Patton, b. 1763 prob Ire, married William Morrow in Bourbon Co Ky on 4 Feb. 1791. [Bond signed by Wm Patton]. She died 1831.

 e.    Thomas Patton, b. ca 1764 Ire?, marr. Jane Maxwell in Bourbon Co. Ky. on 25 June 1791. Thos was on 1807--1810 tax lists; he is not found in 1810 census. Beginning 1814 Jean Patton is on tax lists with 74 acres, maybe his widow?

 f.    Anna Patton, b. ca 1767 Ire?, married James Steel 16 Jan 1788 in Bourbon Co Ky. He died 1823; she died 1860 in Clark Co Ohio.

[56] Descendants of William Patton and Sarah ------

 a.    Joseph Patton Sr.2, b. 1 Oct. 1759 (Ire/ Pa?), would appear to be the man named in the will of William Patton (1795), which provided “First, I give and bequeath to my oldest son Joseph One hundred and twenty acres of land where he now lives including all the improvements”. (Bourbon will book A) Beginning in 1787 Joseph was listed on the Bourbon tax duplicate without land. No list for 1794 survives. In 1795 we find Joseph with 120 acres on Hinkson Creek, 4 horses and 17 cattle; he continues on these lists with 120 acres until 1807 when his holdings increased to 220 acres. Joseph married Margaret McClintock in 1783 in Centre Presbyterian Church, died 1 Sept. 1822 Bourbon Co Ky. (735) . He was on the 1810 and 1820 Bourbon Co censuses. He died intestate. Margaret was born 8 April 1762?, died at age 76 in Bourbon Co Ky on 18 Feb 1838. His children have been listed by descendants, based on descent of property. We will reproduce this list below with added comments.

       1)     Sarah Patton, b 26 June 1784, married James Nailer, died 13 July 1855. Buried Ruddles Mill. She was alive in 1830 when she deeded land to her brother, Joseph. Children are unknown.

       2)    Joseph Patton Jr 3 b 16 June 1786, first appears on tax lists in 1807; married 9 Feb 1810 Margaret (Peggy) Shannon in Bourbon Co. Ky.; John Shannon was bondsman. He appears as Joseph Patton Jr on many tax lists to distinguish him from his father. After his father died in 1822 his 220 acre farm was divided between Joseph Jr and Hugh, who after this time were taxed on 110 acres each. (By 1825 it was 100 acres each). In 1830 Joseph evidently sold his land to Hugh and left for Ohio.

       3)     Elizabeth Patton b 27 February 1788, d 1864 Highland Co. Ohio. She married her cousin (1st cousin once removed) James Patton (son of Joseph and Elizabeth Dunlap Patton. Grandson of William and Sarah Dunlap Patton. Their children and descendants are traced in the William Patton outline, page 56.11 below.

       4)     William Patton b. 15 February 1790 d 15 December 1806 at the age of 16.

       5)     Mary (Polly) Patton, b 15 November 1791 d 24 July 1859 (Buried in an iron fence enclosed plot in Stonermouth Cemetery with her husband and son. She married her 1st cousin once removed William Patton, son of John, grandson of William Sr. The son, John William, survived his mother by 4 days. No will but lengthy inventory being divided equally between her family and his family. Her brother Hugh and his brother Alexander L. administered the estate. He owned much property in Harrison County.) (739)

       6)     John Patton, b 14 November 1793 d. November 1796.

       7)     Hugh Patton b 1 October 1795 can be confirmed as a son of Joseph Sr as he inherited half the home farm on Hingson Creek. He died 7 November 1866. Hugh married Jane NESBIT 22 March 1820. She was born 9 November 1800, d 19 July 1855 buried Ruddles Mills, Bourbon Co. KY.

         8)   John Patton was born on 4 July 1798.

        9)    Margaret Patton was born in 1808 (note very large gap in ages!). In 1823, at the age of 15, she married Joseph Patton (son of John, 1769-1816). Margaret died in 1828 and her husband in 1823 so there were probably no children.

Joseph Patton Sr of Harrison Co Ky

Joseph Patton Sr. It is the contention of longtime researcher Elaine Elliott that Joseph was the youngest brother of William Patton (b 1720s) of Bourbon Co., Ky; she gives his birth as about 1750, in Ireland. His wife’s name has been given as Elizabeth Dunlap. As we discussed above, this man seems to the Lt Joseph Patton of Cumberland Co Penna, who left Pennsylvania at some point after 1783. (No record of his selling land in Pennsylvania has come to light). Joseph died in Harrison Co Ky in 1817. (739) He does not appear as head of household in 1810, maybe living with a daughter? Will? Tax lists?

Harrison Co is just north of Bourbon Co. Several sons of Joseph moved to Highland Co Ohio at the same time part of William’s family moved here, and Pattons in both lines extensively intermarried and are buried in the Fall Creek cemetery, so it is plausible and even very likely that Joseph was William’s brother. Elliott gives the following children:

a.   William PATTON, b 1770s, m Jane Dillon on 14 January 1799 Bourbon County, Kentucky Official record of this marriage not yet found, but it appears he died abt 1808 and she paid taxes on his 74 acre tract on Flat Run in 1814..

While still a resident of Bourbon Co he bought a tract in Highland Co Ohio in Feb 1815. They moved here by 1820 (census). Joseph wrote his will in Highland Co which names wife and children. His gravestone reads Joseph Patton- d. Nov 4, 1838, aet. 62- 11-24. Born in 1782, Ann died on 7 Jan 1860; she was aged 77 yrs, 8 mo, 17 days.

                a)     Thomas S Patton, b 1849 Iowa.

                b)    Celestia Patton, b 1853, not living with her father in 1860, must have been living with other relatives. She married Lafayette Bacon in 1876 and got her father’s Bible.

James married his cousin Elizabeth Patten, daughter of Joseph Patten (1759-1822) & Margaret McClintock (1761-1838). They were married in Bourbon Co Ky on or about 4/7 April 1808; Joseph Patton was bondsman. James purchased 139 acres in Highland Co Ohio on 22 July 1811, the same day his kinsman William Patton bought a 139 acre tract. Born on February 27, 1786 in Kentucky, Elizabeth died in Highland County, Ohio on 19 June 1864; she was aged 76-3-23. William and Charlotte subsequently had 2 additional sons and a daughter by the time William had settled his large family at the pioneer settlement of Plainview, MN, after 1855. On 28 December 1859, William filed suit in the interests of his three oldest children in the inheritance of their late mother Mary "Polly", who inherited "from her father, James Patton, dec'd., in 212 acres on the waters of Fall Creek in Survey No. 2320, of which said Patton died seized." [56] APPENDIX- OTHER PATTONS of Bourbon Co. Ky.

WILLIAM PATTON, b 1759 (Rev War vet)

William Patton was born at New Ark, Pennsylvania on 26 June 1759 (based on two separate statements in 142b). [Newark Monthly Mtg Quaker records, Chester Co Pa. show that a Richard Patten was here by 1741] He enlisted in the spring of 1780 as a mounted dragoon in Capt. William Locke's service, under Col McCoy at Salisbury [Rowan Co.] North Carolina. He was taken prisoner by Col. Tarleton at Monck's Corner; he was paroled on 23 May 1780, a copy of the parole which he still had in his possession in 1832. However it was some time later when he was exchanged. In 1782 he was attached to the NC Continental Line. While at Salisbury he was personally acquainted with Gen Andrew Jackson, later President of the US. He does not say where he was between 1782-1795. (142b)

William stated that he moved to the city of Paris in Bourbon Co Kentucky about 1795, and lived there until he made his pension application in 1832. (142b)

William appears consistently on Bourbon Co tax lists beginning in 1795, with a small tract of 50 acres on Hinkson Creek, entered in the name of Jno Smith. He never acquired any extra land. He is present on tax lists here through 1835. On 16 Aug 1832 he appeared in court age 73 years on the 26th of June last, mentioned a small tract of land. He did receive a pension. He died, presumably in Bourbon Co., on 4 May 1835, leaving a widow Jane. (142b)

Jane stated when applying for a widow's pension that they were married in Bourbon Co Ky on 1 March 1807 by Isaac Munsey, a Baptist preacher, and a cerfified copy of their marr license is in the pension file. She said her maiden name was Jane GORE and that she had not been married before, nor after Wm's death. (Name spelled Gore on original marr bond). Jane Patton was a widow on pension roll Feb 1853. In Nov 1853 William Patton (age 52) and Andrew J Patton (age 36?), no relationship stated, of Harrison Co Ky, said they well knew William Patton was a Rev War vet when he was living in Bourbon Co. She was then appar living in Harrison Co Ky. She also applied for a bounty land warrant 3 March 1855; she was then about 73, hence born abt. 1782. The warrant was issued, for 160 acres located in Springfield, Mo. (wt # 38576) In 1901 an inquiry was made about this land by the grandchild of George H Patton who in abt 1870 had received inquiries from Columbus Ohio. George was allegedly a descendant of William, RS. In the 1850 census, JANE Patton of Harrison Co was shown as 66 (b abt 1784 in Pa), and living with her was Jackson Patton, age 50?, b Ky, a blacksmith. Also we find William Patton, 56, b Ky, and Mary (58?). It looks as if these men were sons of William by a prior marriage.

Further evidence that William had been previously married is discussed below. Although there were many men named William Patton in Bourbon Co., one did marry Polly Wilson here in 1794, just about the time our present man came to the area. Another Wm md Catharine VanHook in 1794 here! Was one the mysterious first wife??

Possible offspring of William based on tax and census records plus guesswork:

[56] WILLIAM PATTON

 a.     Charles Patton, born about 1798 (age 51 in 1850), served as a very young man in the War of 1812 as a private in Capt. Davis' Ky Militia from May to July 1814. He married Mary Rader in Bourbon Co on 2 Nov. 1816. The original marriage bond was signed by his father, William Patton and also by Jane Patton. [This surely refers to Wm Patton RS and his 2nd wife Jane Gore]. Charles does not appear in any tax lists until 1824. He is here in 1820 (census), born 1794-1804, with young wife and a daughter age under 10. By 1830 he moved to Oldham County and was here also in 1840, 1850. Charles died in 1858 leaving the following children (per brucek8@juno.com) He applied for a bounty land warrant in 1855 (Wt 12006-160-55), and died in Louisville in June 1858. His widow applied for a widow's pension (Pension rec. 11149 & 6449). No trace of this family in 1860. Some family names in the pension records include Ward H Patton and Charles B Patton.

        a.     (dau, born ca 1818).

        b.     Charles B Patton, b. 1826 Ky, living near father in 1850. He was a tailor, and married Elizabeth .....

        c.     Andrew Jackson Patton, b. 22 Feb. 1833 Oldham Co, died 24 Feb. 1919 in Louisville, Ky.

        d.     George R Patton, b. ... A man of this name was in Frankfort in 1870.

        e.     Henry T Patton, b. 18... Maybe on 1850 Bourbon census, living alone.

        f.     Nancy Patton, b 1839 Ky, at home in 1850

        g.     Logan Patton, b 1844 Ky (on 1850 census)

 b.    A[ndrew] Jackson Patton, b. about 1799; William said he knew "Old Hickory" in person. Surely he named a son after this charismatic war hero even before Andy got to the Presidency! Jackson Patton was in 1840 census in Harrison Co. 1850? \\TRY 1860 Pendleton Co census.

 c.    William Patton Jr., born about 1803, married Elizabeth about 1830. William Jr appears on Bourbon Co tax lists next to Wm Sr and Charles beginning 1826, suggesting a birth year around 1805. William and Mary are on 1850 Harrison Co Ky census.

        1)    William Patton, b. 1831

        2)    Amelia Patton, b. 1834

        3)    Susan Patton, b. 1841 Ky

 d.    Ward Patton, born 1808 Ky., appears first in Bourbon tax lists in the year 1830 after turning 21. Ward moved to Covington, Kenton Co. Ky by 1850. when he appears with wife Martha .......; they were evidently married about 1834. His occupation is shown as engineer. Three daughters were born by then.

        1)    Mary Patton, b. 1835

        2)    Harriett Patton, b. 1837

        3)    Julia Ann Patton, b. 1842 Ky

 e.    3 daughters at home in 1830.

1. James Patton, on 1791 tax list (b prior to 1770). Maybe a brother of Wm SR? Prob same as Jas (1765-84) on 1810 Bourbon census. If so, he was b 1765-69. A man of this name is on 1809-1812 Bourbon tax lists then drops off. The structure of his family exactly matches that of James Patton in the 1820 Highland Co Ohio census (with ch born in interim). On 22 July 1811 Samuel Rees sold two tracts in Highland of 139 acres each, one to James and one to William Patton. This suggests a strong family kinship!
