NOTES_ Rutherford Co begins on page 73. Pages are divided into two halves; I have designed the second half "a"; each whole page contains about 75 names, so these men did not live right together, nor were they very far apart. The "AIS" index for this schedule is terrible- it lists no page numbers, omits Matthew, has wrong data for Samuel; it includes a Thomas Patton whom I did not find; also a Numrid Jinkins (sic), also not found. The original is exceptionally clear. Did not find a David Crockett in index or original. The index omits many names, one of the worst I have ever seen!

NOTES:

  1. William Patton of Cumberland River, 100 acres on tax list. This man was named in his father Robert's 1829 will. Wm marr 1810 Anne Presley, listed as Ann Patton in 1830 census. [There is a THIRD William Patton marriage I cannot account for!]*
  2. William S Patton owned 80 ac on Sinking Creek which was willed to him by his father Thomas Patton (1817). In 1811 Wm S marr Fanny Sanderson who survived him.
Wm S had two sons living in 1830, one born 1815-19. Was he John F? Patton?
  1. This Robert was born after 1775, hence he is the man who marr Elizabeth Perry in 1823. This man had 130 acres on Madison Creek. I ASSUME he is the Robert Patton who is named in the will of Robert Patton (Sr) in 1806, who left land to his son Robert but did not mention the location, at least not in abstracts I have seen. In 1807 A Robert Patton purchased 219 acres on Madison Creek, presumably Robert Sr for his son's use?
  2. This Robert was born prior to 1775, probably more like 1760, and he is the man who married Susanna Benthall, wid of Danl Benthall prior to 1804. The 1820 tax list shows this man with 200 acres on the Cumberland River; Robert and Thomas Patton received "Cumberland lands" per Andrew Patton's will. [NOTE- this inherited land prob sold in 1800] Robert Patton bought 343 acres on "north side of Cumberland" in 1808.
  3. Sally (maiden name not known) was the recent widow of Thomas Patton who died, testate in 1819. The male at home is John Bailey Patton who was about 20 in 1820, first on tax lists in 1821.
  4. Mary Patton is the widow of Duncan Patton- see partition deeds.

Notes in [brackets] are editorial additions by DVA. Obviously exact birth years and states of birth do not appear in the original census- they have been supplied where possible as a quick-finding aid by DVA. In every case recourse to the original should be made. Often birth years are not perfectly consistent from census year to census year, especially in the case of persons without the advantage of an education.

NOTE- John Patton married Mary Thompson 24 Nov 1794 in Orange Co NC and later moved to Wilson Co. TN. He had a large family, well known since the family was prosperous and the Bible records survived. Andrew married in 1819 but by 1830 had only two surviving children. At least one brother was living with him in 1830 and another brother was living with John so it is hard to tell exactly who lived where in 1830. Joseph was married by 1830 but was not head of a household then.

1840 Jackson Co Tennessee

Jackson Co. in northern Tenn., on the border of Ky. The Pattons here all came from Montgomery Co Ky, via Wayne Co Ky., along with related Maxwells, by about 1825. Note that in 1842 Putnam Co was formed and most, but not all, Pattons, were in the Putnam Co section. The area they settled was Mine Lick Creek, later known as Baxter, Putnam Co., Tenn.

[Alexander, son of Maj Isaac Patton (34.14) was born 1 Dec 1803 in Tenn which is a good match for date and place of birth. HOWEVER- looking back to 1840 we find Alexander Patton of Madison Co TN had two boys and a girl by then, a perfect match for the above man’s family. Another Alexander Patton was Wm Alexander, b 6 Nov 1805 Nashville, who marr (2) Frances Harriett Chennault in 1833, and this must be the man in question. By 1860 he went to Tippah Co Mississippi. aand finally to Texas. See page 34.38]

    not true!

    1839.
    4. In 1840 both Petillo (spelled out) and Mary [b 1800-09!] were heads of household here. There were also five more Patton households here then! Sebastian, Jas, Thos S, Isaac and Robert. Isaac, b 1777 SC was the patriarch. The first three were prob sons of John (b 1769).
