NOTE- the above group is essentially identical to Capt. Thos Cowen's 1787 tax list, taken 5th of May 1787. This list is unusual in that it lists the actual ages rather than age groups as in other districts. Since there seems to be little difference between the 1787 and 1790 lists it is probably safe to say that the SAME John Patton is enumerated in both lists. His age in 1787 was 21, for a birth year of about 1766; this does not agree with the census of 1800 if this is still the younger John.

NOTE- in 1810 there is a MARY Patton [b 1784-94] living next to Mathew and Huston Patton; she is surely a widow. Her kids match those of Thomas Patton [Jr] in 1800 census, so she was presumably his widow.

Family sources suggest that Thos Sr (1726-1808) had a son Thos who was born in 1777, making him the male 16-26 under Thomas Sr's entry. If we have the wrong birth date for this Thos perhaps the male living with Thos is an unidentidied son, and Thomas [Jr] is his son.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    NOTES-
Elijah, above, seems to be the man alleged to have married Margaret Cathey; this man was well-off, and his wife was presumably still living. From tombstone we know that Margaret, wife of Elijah died in 1813, age 67- surely this couple. So he was alive in 1810! An Elijah was in 1820 Burke Co; since Elijah (b. ... ) was in Maury Co Tenn in 1820 we conclude that this was Elijah Sr. NEED 1820 Maury; 1830 TN/NC

NOTE- this county was home to two distinct, large, noted Patton lines, and the two families lived next to each other. One was from Tamlacht- Finlagan, Co Londonderry, Ireland and arrived here about 17890. The other was a pre-revolutionary family from Burke Co. They even named children after each other, making this a difficult area of research. But because many (not all!) of these people were wealthy there are many records.
