Welcome to the PATTON webpage of David V. Agricola, M.D. Last revised 17th June 2005.
PATTON
This website was set up in November 2001 with the primary goal of sharing genealogical information on the many PATTON lineages of America, particularly the earlier Scots-Irish Patton lines whose ancestors arrived on these shores prior to about 1800. Dr Agricola has been collecting information on many of these lines for almost two decades now from many archives, public records, and correspondence with many fine researchers. It is his desire to make as much of his research available online as physically possible; of course many files are only available in hard copy at present.
Dr Agricola’s own Patton line begins with Henry Patton (ca 1710-ca 1770) of Back Creek, western Augusta (later Montgomery) Co. Va.; in researching this line he found many references to various other Patton lines, which he took up an interest in. At present there are not many persons left in the field who are attempting to work on many Patton lines due to the baffling numbers of individuals concerned. A major problem with Patton research is that many individuals withe the same name lived at the same time, often living in the same area. For example, four men named John Patton served in the same Regiment and company from Floyd Co Ky during the Civil War. Many such examples can be cited. When trying to identify a specific “William Patton” born about 1790 in a database such as the International Genealogical Index (IGI), one is faced with tremendous amounts of duplication, and incorrect or conflicting information. This happens because many persons have entered data, with various sources of information, some of which are incorrect or not documented. There may be a better method.
The idea of this website is to establish a database for the PATTON name based on very reliable records, in order that research be reproducible. Any suggestions as to improving the website will be gratefully accepted by myself at my email address: dvagricola@stratos.net.
The founder of this website pursues genealogy as a hobby and likes to help others with their own research problems, as long as they are within his area of interest, which is Pattons outside the New England area, born prior to roughly 1850. An exception is made in favor of his own line, the Floyd Co Ky line, which he traces to the present. In the course of his researches Dr Agricola has been issuing a series of volumes on Patton lineages, many of which are inter-related, under the overall title “A Patton Compendium”. A fuller description of this work-in-progress with indices to all individuals discussed is available online, see below. Anyone who wants just a page or two concerning an individual may request this electronically. Those who wish to see how their line fits into the vast web of Patton lines may be interested in purchasing the appropriate volume of the Compendium, which includes illustrations and maps which I am unable to upload to the web.

THE PATTON COMPENDIUM
O ver the years I have been attempting to set down in some sort of logical fashion the numerous Patton lineages which have established themselves in America, with particular reference to the lines which can be shown to be resident here generally prior to the American Revolution, and I am mostly studying the lines prior to the year 1850. This is for the realistic reason that although I am a young man of 56 summers and come from an extraordinarily long-lived line, I wish to focus my energies on doing genealogy that will be of the most use to the most people with the time allotted for such endeavors. After 1850 records are much better in most instances and although I am certainly willing to help out where I can , after this the number of Pattons becomes enormous. Anyone who is interested in what I have accomplished, with the help of MANY other dedicated researchers- I certainly do not want to take all the credit here- should investigate the following links:
An overall description of the work, both published volumes, plus lines still being researched. A table of contents is included. Click on:
http://my.stratos.net/~dvagricola/compendium.html
There is an INDEX to names of persons born with the name of PATTON generally prior to the 1850 who are covered in the whole series., except those discussed in the Henry Patton of Augusta Co Va line below. This is a large file, about 1.8 Mb, so may download slowly if you are using a dialup modem connection. I will be happy to answer questions about the thousands of persons indexed herein!

Section [31] My own line is that of James Patton of Floyd Co Ky, son of Henry Patton of Montgomery Co Va.. Henry’s family is found [briefly] at : http://my.stratos.net/~dvagricola/henry.html
This gives Chapter Two of my book on the Pattons of Floyd Co Ky (see below). This book represents section [31] of the Compendium.
James Patton (ca 1752 Va - ca 1817 Ky) was a pioneer settler of Floyd Co Ky. By his wife Florence Graham Patton he had ten children, about sixty grandchildren and by now their descendants could fill several counties. Due to this fact in writing my book “Descendants of James and Florence [Graham] Patton of Floyd County Ky”*, I have purposely limited coverage of female lines to the children of women who were born with the maiden name of Patton. This book has been well-received and is being frequently revised. At this writing it is in its tenth edition. Copies are currently available but please email me for the price as with each revision the printing cost changes. This is the ONLY book in the Compendium that is taken down to the present day as it is the author’s own line. Dr Agricola is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution through the service of James Patton, Montgomery Co Va Militia. This book contains 190 plus pages, has maps, photos, and is fully indexed and referenced.
*Please note that as of Sept 2003 the title to this book has been changed to “Descendants of Henry Patton Sr of Augusta Co Virginia.” This change in title has been made to reflect the growing coverage of the lines of Henry’s sons Thomas and John Patton in later editions. The book is currently in its 11th edition.

Section [32] An interesting line which started out in Lancaster Co Pa, went to Augusta Co Va, and thence to Oglethorpe Co Ga and many other locales is that of Jacob Patton Sr. (born by 1716). This line has been studied and very well documented by Clara and Wilbur Park (1991), and I will just give a very brief outline online. Anyone wishing to see if he belongs to this line can quickly check here, and if interested can get much more from their book which is at the LDS Library and other large libraries. Click on:

Any good genealogical research is based on solid documentation. The experienced researcher knows that it is useful to use such sources as “Ancestral File” and Gedcoms published on the web as Finding Tools. But ultimately we need to get to and utilize the primary sources, the documents created at the time the event occurred. In the course of my researches I have compiled a reference list of over 800 printed and archival sources relating to the Patton name. Some of these sources are secondary, many are primary. This list is constantly being added to. Many exist in electronic form and can be sent to interested parties on request. URL: http://my.stratos.net/~dvagricola/ref.html
